What's Your Name?

Nicole Netkin-Collins

How long have you been doing CrossFit? Who or what got you started?

Almost 1 year!  Daniel N-C (aka, Waffle) encouraged me to start because I was tired of working out at home during covid times.  I also had never focused on strength training before and wanted to start.

Tell us a little bit about yourself: (Family, career, hobbies, interests)

I'm an extroverted Hufflepuff, which tells you that two of my hobbies/interests are personality tests & Harry Potter.  I like to read, listen to podcasts, travel, and catch up with friends & family while taking walks.  In addition to trying to figure out this CrossFit thing, I'm also learning to ski and taking classes to learn to communicate using ASL.  Most days, though, I simply manage to work, parent & workout.  I'm a law school career counselor at CU (my job is the reason we're in Colorado) and am passionate about students' professional development and working toward making the legal profession more diverse, equitable & inclusive.  Last, but not least, I'm married to Waffle (I'll get you all calling him Waffle sooner than later) and our 7 year old, Jonah, often joins us (with his iPad) at the gym.  We met Freshman year of college and, surprisingly, Alpine is the first time we've ever worked out together at the same gym.

What is your favorite memory at Alpine CrossFit?

The Thanksgiving meal/party.  More specifically, Lisa made the mistake of telling Jonah (the 7 year old Netkin-Collins) that she brought s'mores fixings and when we wanted to leave, Jonah insisted that we wait for the s'mores.  Lisa, exhibiting her good nature, got the s'mores going (even after she tried to say "next time").

What was your workout regimen before joining Alpine?

During covid - CrossRope (weighted jump ropes) at home

Pre-covid - Kickboxing (I practiced karate growing up)

How has CrossFit affected your life outside of the gym?

I noticed a difference on a hike this past summer with a friend - we did the Royal Arch in Boulder and, while it was still hard, I felt stronger and more able to "keep up" than the previous times I'd done that particular hike.

If you could write a book, what would it be about?

Either a utopian novel (fiction) or thoughts on friendship (non-fiction) or a children's book about something

What category would you be least excited/most excited to see on Jeopardy?

I googled "common jeopardy categories" and out of the list, I'd say:

least excited: books in German

most excited: 4-letter words

What was your first workout, and what did you think after doing it?

The first workout I did after Foundations was for the CrossFit Open last year (21.1) and I over-dramatically thought I was going to pass out.

What is your favorite and least favorite WOD?

I like a long EMOM (built in rest!)My least favorite are sprint-style workouts

What are your favorite and least favorite movements?

Favorite: Back squat
Least favorite: Snatch

What advice would you give a newbie just getting started at Alpine CrossFit?

I'm still new!  I get discouraged a lot, but I keep showing up and that'd be my advice: just keep showing up and try not to compare yourself to everyone else.  Shake off a bad day and show up again the next time.  Having a sense of humor helps too.
