How long have you been doing CrossFit? Who or what got you started?Tell us a little bit about yourself: (Family, career, hobbies, interests)
I have been doing Crossfit since May 2018. My fiancée Jake started first. When I saw how much he was enjoying it, I had to join the party!I grew up in Chicago. As a kid I was always bouncing off the walls so my parents put me into gymnastics and soccer to try to better direct my energy. I dabbled in diving and tennis over the years as well. I went to undergrad at the University of Illinois where I studied Kinesiology and Spanish. After graduating I spent a couple years working for an immigrant rights non-profit in Chicago, working with minors detained in the immigration system. I then went on to graduate school to study physical therapy at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (go Badgers!). I now work as a physical therapist in a small orthopedic clinic in Wheat Ridge. I love hiking, gummy bears, cuddling with my dog, and watching the Office.
What is your favorite memory at Alpine CrossFit?
After my first drop in class, Ian and Dana were both at the gym and stood around chatting with Jake and I for 45 minutes. We were looking for a new gym and I was so overwhelmed with how friendly and welcoming they were! We were sold!
What was your workout regimen before joining Alpine?
I worked out most days but not really with any goals, purpose, or organization. I was running a few miles 2-3x per week, doing yoga a couple times every week, and doing Les Mills classes (which really are pretty fun for the record).
How has CrossFit affected your life outside of the gym?
Crossfit has given me an incredible appreciation for what my body can do. It has made me feel more confident and more comfortable in my skin. I also believe it makes me better at my job – giving me ideas about scaling exercises up and down.
If you could write a book, what would it be about?
Cooking in a gluten free and vegan household. And how to figure out what food allergies you have after a lifetime of stomach issues. OR it would just be a photo album with cute pictures of my dog.
What category would you be least excited/most excited to see on Jeopardy?
Most excited: Anatomy or Friends trivia
Least excited: French literature or Greek mythology
What was your first workout, and what did you think after doing it?
My first workout was snatching. I remember feeling SO uncoordinated trying to figure out the movement! Just a couple days later, my third workout was Murph – That was a little bit rough!
What is your favorite and least favorite WOD?
If I had to make my perfect WOD it would be handstand walking, box jumps, toes to bar, and running.
I would be SO sad to see a workout that was thrusters, rowing, and deadlifts.
What are your favorite and least favorite movements?
I really enjoy: handstand walking, bar muscle ups (although I have a ways still to go with these), and snatches
I really dislike: thrusters and sumo deadlift high pulls
What advice would you give a newbie just getting started at Alpine CrossFit?
Don’t be too hard on yourself; you’ll have days where you feel good and days where you don’t. That’s okay! Never sacrifice mechanics for the sake of hitting a big weight.
